How to use it
Type the problem as it is written, for example "solve log2(x) + log2(x - 2) = 3". Use ^ for powers and / for fractions.
Read the solution. It comes as numbered steps, each naming the rule it uses, and ends with the final answer.
If a step is unclear, ask about it in your own words, such as "explain step 2". Ask for a similar problem to try one yourself.
What the precalculus problem solver covers
- Functions: domain, range, composition, inverses (also on the function calculator)
- Polynomial and rational functions: zeros, holes, asymptotes
- Exponential and logarithmic functions, growth and decay
- Arithmetic and geometric sequences and series
- Conic sections: circles, parabolas, ellipses, hyperbolas
- Vectors and polar coordinates
- An introduction to limits
Worked example: log₂(x) + log₂(x − 2) = 3
Combine the logarithms: log₂(x(x − 2)) = 3, so x(x − 2) = 2³ = 8.
Then x² − 2x − 8 = 0, which factors as (x − 4)(x + 2) = 0, so x = 4 or x = −2.
A logarithm needs a positive argument, so x = −2 is rejected. The answer is x = 4.
Common mistakes
- Skipping the domain check after solving a log equation.
- Confusing the inverse f⁻¹(x) with the reciprocal 1/f(x).
- Using the infinite geometric series formula when |r| ≥ 1, where the series has no sum.
- Calling a hole a vertical asymptote: a factor that cancels leaves a hole.
Questions students ask
Does precalc include trigonometry?
Usually, yes. The solver handles trig ratios, identities and equations as well, and trigonometry AI has more on them.
Can I check my own answer?
Send the problem with your answer and ask whether it is right. You'll get the step where it goes wrong, if it does.
Do I need an account?
No. You can type or dictate problems without signing in. Signing in with Google or Discord is free; it keeps your chats beyond 3 days and lets you attach a photo, PDF or Word file.
