How to use the word problem solver
Paste the whole problem as written, units included.
The solution lists what is given and what is asked, writes the equation, and solves it.
The last step checks that the answer makes sense in the story, with units.
Word problems it handles
- Distance, rate and time
- Work problems: pipes, painters, machines
- Percentages, discounts, tax and interest
- Mixtures and concentrations
- Ages and consecutive integers
- Geometry and probability word problems, which the geometry solver and probability solver also take
Worked example: two pipes
One pipe fills a tank in 3 hours, another in 6 hours. How long do they take together?
The first fills 1/3 of the tank per hour and the second 1/6. Together: 1/3 + 1/6 = 1/2 of the tank per hour.
So the tank is full in 2 hours.
Common mistakes
- Mixing units, such as minutes and hours.
- Averaging two speeds. Average speed is total distance divided by total time.
- Taking a percentage of the wrong amount.
- Answering a different question than the one asked.
Questions students ask
Can I take a photo of a word problem?
Yes, once signed in: the math solver for images shows the text it read, and you can fix it before sending.
Does it only give the answer?
No. Setting up the equation is the hard part of a word problem, so that is where the solution starts.
Do I need an account?
No. You can type or dictate problems without signing in. Signing in with Google or Discord is free; it keeps your chats beyond 3 days and lets you attach a photo, PDF or Word file.
